Indalu COVID-19 Relief Fund
Indalu means ‘nature’ in Xhosa. This game reserve has lived up to its formidable name since December 2014 by being a sanctuary for various wildlife inhabitants of the Garden Route. Buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, rhinos and various antelope species all call Indalu home. Not to mention our gentle, majestic and now world-famous elephants that have stolen the hearts of many visitors. Founded and operated by the Van Rooyens, Indalu has grown to an extended family of more than 12 000 people that has visited us from all over the world. They are people whom we regard as our conservation partners that have built intimate friendships with us and our wildlife to cherish for the rest of their lives.
Then came the uncertainty brought about by Covid-19 .The South African Tourism Industry is especially severely impacted. February was the last of the tourism industry as we know it and the last we would have seen anything like “normal” for a long time, threatening the closure of establishments and employees losing their jobs. There will be a huge slump around the world as each country and town will try to safe and rebuild their own tourism industry.
The global spread of the Corona virus has led to the temporary or permanent shutdown of every flourishing tourism business in South Africa. For the family of Indalu Game Reserve, this uncertainty has a very real and direct effect.
Indalu has grown in a short period of time to be one of the top tourist destinations in the Mossel Bay region, as recognized by TripAdvisor. This achievement has only been possible through the dedicated and valued support of you the INDALU GUEST, who have been so instrumental to Indalu’s growth and prosperity to where we are today...
In a “perfect world” we enjoyed a medium to high tourism season from around September to May. As tourism forms the backbone of Indalu, the lack of tourists to the usually bustling Garden Route has led to an inevitable decline in the reserve’s income as a result of significant cancellations in booked accommodation and adventure tours for the rest of the year.
In addition to the pandemic, the Mossel Bay region is still in the grip of a 5 year drought that cause a further tremendous impact on the feeding needs of all the wildlife at Indalu.
Being a white-owned family business, we also unfortunately don’t qualify for financial aid from the ANC government, who only support BBBEE requirement for businesses that qualify for the Tourism relief fund or SME funds made available.
We are therefore dependent on our own initiatives to feed and sustain our wildlife. At this stage, there is no way of knowing what the long-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic will be on the tourism industry. Though we have closed our doors until further notice due to the national lockdown, we are determined to keep our heads high and see this crisis period as an opportunity for growth, innovative thinking and introspection.
Our hearts and prayers are with the medical and security personnel that are fighting on the front lines against this pandemic, as well as those who have also been directly affected by the virus in various ways. We salute the other numerous game reserves in the country who are also fighting to keep our natural wildlife safe and alive.
Our animals miss you, we miss you and we can’t wait to have you back in our midst to continue making unforgettable memories in the African bush. Until that day arrives, we appreciate and cherish each contribution that you are able to make towards the survival of our precious wildlife, as well as our dedicated staff and their families.
Your donation will also assist in the maintenance and up-keeping of infrastructure, facilities, vehicles and land, water & electricity, insurance, rates& taxes and bond payments.
Please spread the word and donate any amount you are able to give. You can help be the difference that ensures we are able to operate at full capacity when we open our doors for visitors again and people start to travel again as flights resume and countries open their borders.
Hope is a powerful thing. It’s a positive expectation of the future, it is the epitome of faith.
It is Indalu’s hope that we will become stronger together through this crisis and realise that as tomorrow is not guaranteed, we should live life to the fullest, every single day!
Indalu is awaiting your visit to cherish many more lovely Africa memories as we have hope in our future through faith. God bless!
With faith, hope, love and gratitude
